7月8日（月）、2024 Miss SAKE Japan 南侑里さんとともに、大阪・関西万博イタリア館で行われた鏡開きセレモニーに参加させていただきました。このセレモニーは、イタリア共和国インフラ・交通大臣マッテオ・サルヴィーニ氏（Matteo Salvini）の公式訪問を歓迎して実施されました。
当日は、サルヴィーニ大臣をはじめ、駐日イタリア大使ジャンルイジ・ベネデッティ氏（Gianluigi Benedetti）、関西万博イタリア政府代表マリオ・ヴァッターニ氏（Mario Vattani）とともに、イタリア館前の特設ステージに登壇させていただきました。
鏡開きでつながる文化と友情
登壇者の3名は、イタリア館オリジナルロゴが施された青い半被に身を包み、株式会社 岸本吉二商店さまが、今回のために特別に製作した菰樽（こもだる）と枡を用いて華やかに鏡開きが執り行われました。
登壇者全員の「よいしょ！よいしょ！よいしょ！」の掛け声とともに木槌が振り下ろされ、樽が開かれた瞬間、日本酒が勢いよく空に舞い、会場からは大きな歓声が上がりました。日本の伝統文化とイタリア文化が見事に融合した象徴的で感動的な瞬間でした。
このセレモニーに使用された「菰樽（こもだる）」は、明治33年創業の老舗・岸本吉二商店さまが特注で製作されたものです。100年以上にわたり手作業で菰縄を作り続けてきた伝統技術は、日本酒文化を支える重要な要素であり、現在では国内で菰樽を製造するのはわずか2社のみという貴重な存在です。まさに、日本の酒文化を象徴する伝統工芸です。なお、この菰樽に込められた想いや歴史については、先日開催された「國酒フェア2025」にて、代表取締役 岸本敏裕さまが実演を交えて詳しくご紹介くださいました。また、今回のイタリア館訪問では、岸本吉二商店 岸本吉起さまにもご同行いただき、菰樽や枡の解説・準備をしていただきました。
さらに、今回振る舞われたお酒は、日本酒ブランド「SAKE HUNDRED」がイタリアパビリオンのために特別に用意したスパークリング日本酒『深星（しんせい）』。伝統と革新の架け橋となるこの一杯は、日本とイタリア、二つの文化が響き合う中で誕生しました。“芸術は生命を再生する”というイタリア館のテーマに呼応し、2000年以上の歴史を持つ日本酒を「飲む芸術」として昇華させた『深星』は、世界各国の大使やVIPの方々への贈呈酒として提供されています。味わいだけでなく、心を満たし、人と人とをつなぐ体験価値を届ける――そんなSAKE HUNDREDの理念が込められた、まさに世界に誇る“和の芸術”です。
また、今回使用された半被・枡・菰樽には、イタリア館のロゴがデザインされていました。これは、サン・ピエトロ大聖堂と日本の太陽を融合した意匠で、「世界の光」としてのキリストを象徴的に表現しています。これは、イタリア館のテーマである「L’Arte Rigenera la Vita（芸術が生命を再生する）」を視覚的に体現するデザインです。
またセレモニーの後には、登壇者の方々がイタリア館前に設置された七夕の笹飾りに短冊を吊るす際のお手伝いもさせていただきました。サルヴィーニ大臣が短冊に願いを込めて鳴らした、モリーゼ州のマリネッリ鋳造所製の特別な鐘の音色は、国境を越えた友情と平和の願いを象徴するように、静かに、そして力強く響いていました。
大阪・関西万博「イタリア館」―ルネッサンスの理想都市を現代に再構築
2025年の大阪・関西万博に登場するイタリア館は、建築家マリオ・クチネッラ氏率いるMCA（Mario Cucinella Architects）によって設計された、ルネッサンスの理想都市を現代的に再構築した建築空間です。
館内には、劇場・アーケード・広場・イタリア庭園など、イタリア都市文化の象徴的な要素が随所に再現され、訪れた人々はまるで芸術と歴史が共存するイタリアの街を歩いているかのような没入体験を味わえます。入口を進むとまず登場するのは、没入型の映像劇場シアター。ここでは、音楽・歌・舞台芸術のプロフェッショナルによる圧巻のパフォーマンスが映像で展開され、来場者を一瞬にして引き込みます。
続く展示スペースは、木の温もりに包まれた広大な空間。イタリアが誇る最先端の科学技術から、古典美術の傑作まで、さまざまなジャンルの作品が一堂に展示されており、多くの来場者を魅了していました。中でも注目を集めていたのが、古代ローマ時代の彫刻「ファルネーゼのアトラス」。高さ約2メートル、重さ2トンのこの大理石像は、日本初公開の貴重な文化財であり、圧倒的な存在感を放っていました。さらに、バロック期の巨匠カラヴァッジョによる、ヴァチカン美術館所蔵で長らく門外不出であった名画「キリストの埋葬」も展示され、その希少性と芸術的価値の高さに、多くの来場者が息を呑んでいました。
イタリア館の展示は、イタリア文化の奥深さとスケールの大きさを肌で感じられる空間であり、同時に、日本の伝統文化との対話と融合の可能性を強く感じさせてくれるものでした。文化が国や時代、言語を超えて響き合うことの尊さと美しさを、万博という世界の舞台で改めて実感いたしました。
Miss SAKEとして、このような国際的な舞台で日本文化の魅力を発信する機会をいただけたことに、心より感謝申し上げます。 鏡開きという日本の伝統儀式が、大阪・関西万博イタリア館での公式セレモニーの一部として実施され、その瞬間に立ち会えたことは、「國酒」日本酒が持つ文化的価値と、人と人・国と国をつなぐ力を再認識するかけがえのない体験となりました。今後も、この価値や力を国内外へ広めてまいります。

I’m Chisato Tateno, 2025 Miss SAKE Japan.
On Monday, July 8, I had the honor of attending a kagami-biraki ceremony at the Italy Pavilion during the Osaka-Kansai Expo, alongside 2024 Miss SAKE Japan, Yuri Minami.
This ceremony was held in celebration of the official visit of Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini. We were joined on stage by Minister Salvini, His Excellency Italian Ambassador to Japan Gianluigi Benedetti, and Italy Pavilion Commissioner Mario Vattani.
Cultural Harmony Through Kagami‑Biraki
The ceremony featured the three people wearing the pavilion’s iconic blue happi coats, designed with its original logo. We performed the traditional kagami-biraki using a specially crafted komodaru (straw-wrapped sake barrel) and masu cups, made by Kishimoto Kichiji Shōten Co., Ltd.
With a spirited chorus of “Yoisho! Yoisho! Yoisho!”, we struck the barrel’s lid with wooden mallets. As sake soared into the air, the crowd erupted in cheers—truly a powerful fusion of Japanese tradition and Italian culture.
The komodaru used in this ceremony was a special commission by Kishimoto Kichiji Shōten, established in Meiji 33 (1900). With over 100 years of craftsmanship in weaving straw ropes (komonawa), this historic producer is now one of only two companies in Japan still making komodaru—a precious emblem of sake culture and traditional artistry.
At the recent Kokushu Fair 2025, President Toshihiro Kishimoto elaborated on the barrel’s history and meaning through a live demonstration. We were also joined by Yoshiki Kishimoto, who helped explain and prepare the komodaru and masu during our Italy Pavilion visit.

The sake served at the Italy Pavilion
was “Shinsei,” a sparkling sake specially crafted by the Japanese brand SAKE HUNDRED exclusively for the pavilion.
This exceptional sake embodies the harmony between tradition and innovation, born from the cultural resonance between Japan and Italy.
In line with the Italy Pavilion’s theme, “Art Regenerates Life,” Shinsei elevates sake—boasting over 2,000 years of history—into a form of drinkable art.
It is being served to ambassadors and VIP guests from around the world as a symbol of hospitality and cultural connection.
More than just a refined beverage, Shinsei reflects SAKE HUNDRED’s mission to “enrich hearts and lives,” offering a profound experience that brings people together through the artistry of Japanese sake.
The sake vessel and its accompaniments—happi coat, masu, and komodaru—bore the Italy Pavilion’s emblem, which merges St. Peter’s Basilica with the Japanese sun, symbolically portraying Christ as the “Light of the World.” This visually reflects the pavilion’s theme: “L’Arte Rigenera la Vita” (“Art Re‑generates Life”).
After the kagami-biraki, we assisted in hanging tanzaku wishes on a bamboo stand in front of the pavilion. We were especially moved when Minister Salvini rang a special bell cast at Molise’s Marinelli Foundry, signifying a message of friendship and peace that transcends borders—its sound resonating with quiet yet profound strength.
Reconstructing a Renaissance Ideal
The Italy Pavilion at Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, designed by Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) under Mario Cucinella, presents a modern reimagining of a Renaissance ideal city. Featuring a theatre, arcade, piazza, and Italian garden, it offers visitors an immersive experience as though walking through a living Italian city infused with art and history.
At the entrance lies an immersive video theatre, showcasing compelling performances by professional musicians, singers, and stage artists. Adjacent exhibition spaces, enveloped in the warmth of wooden architecture, display Italy’s cutting-edge scientific innovations alongside classic masterpieces—all marvelously displayed to captivate visitors.
Among the highlights is the Farnese Atlas, an ancient Roman marble sculpture approximately 2 meters tall and 2 tons heavy, being exhibited in Japan for the first time. Additionally, the pavilion features the once-hidden Baroque masterpiece “The Burial of Christ” by Caravaggio, from the Vatican Museums—a rare and breathtaking exhibit that left many in awe.
The Italy Pavilion offers a profound sensory journey into Italy’s cultural depth and grandeur—while strongly evoking the dialogue and synergy between Italian and Japanese traditions. It powerfully reminds us of the beauty and value of cultures transcending national, temporal, and linguistic boundaries—made tangible on the world stage of the Expo.
As Miss SAKE, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to promote the charm of Japanese culture in such an international venue. To stand among dignitaries and witness the kagami-biraki—a timeless Japanese ritual—within an official Italy Pavilion ceremony reaffirmed for me the cultural significance of “kokushu” (national sake), and the power of sake to connect people and nations.I remain committed to sharing these values with both domestic and global audiences.
