Miss SAKE participated in a “Sake Vessels” masterclass and a Japanese sake tasting at Japanual in Vienna

2023 Miss SAKE 準グランプリ 齋藤ひかりです。

2025年10月上旬、紅葉に彩られたオーストリア・ウィーンで「Sake Week Vienna」が開催されました。

第5回目となる今回は、例年以上に充実したプログラムが用意され、市内の至る所で日本酒のテイスティングやセミナー、ペアリングディナーが開催されました。

私もその期間中に行われたマスタークラスと日本酒テイスティングに参加しましたので、今回はその様子をご紹介いたします。

 

マスタークラス「酒器について」

今回のマスタークラスは、ウィーン市内にある SHIKI Boutique で開催されました。

SHIKI Boutique は、ウィーン市内にある日本の漆器や錫細工、手作りの包丁、精緻な陶磁器など、伝統工芸品を厳選して取り扱っているセレクトショップです。

店内には高級日本酒を取り揃えた「Sakethek」や、おまかせ料理を提供する8席限定の寿司カウンターも併設されており、工芸品と食文化が融合した特別な空間を体験できます。

こちらのお店は、国際的に活躍するヴァイオリニスト・指揮者の 服部譲二さんがオーナーを務めています。2015年にオープンしたウィーンの高級日本料理店SHIKIをはじめ、さまざまな活動を通じて日本文化を広めることにも積極的に取り組んでいます。

マスタークラスの様子

マスタークラスでは、主に「日本酒をどの酒器で楽しむかによって、香りや味わい、口当たりがどのように変化するのか」を体験しました。

まず、日本酒の基本知識や、日本の歴史・文化の中での飲み方の変遷について教えていただき、日本酒が単なる飲み物ではなく、日本文化の深い背景と結びついていることを学びました。

その後、用意された４種類の酒器：伝統的な木の枡、陶器とガラスのお猪口、そして西洋風のワイングラスで、３種類の日本酒を飲み比べ、それぞれの器がもたらす味わいの違いを体験しました。

• 寒紅梅 純米吟醸 TORESEトレセ 山田錦55%（三重県・寒紅梅酒造）
• 紀土 -KID- 純米大吟醸 40％（和歌山県・平和酒造）
• 七本鎗 木ノ環 生もと 木桶仕込 生原酒（滋賀県・冨田酒造）

同じ日本酒でも、使用する酒器によって印象が大きく変化することに、参加者の皆さんはとても驚かれていました。人によって感じ方や好みが異なるのも興味深く、私自身にとっても、改めて日本文化の奥深さと、酒器によって広がる味わいの可能性を感じる貴重なひとときでした。

映画祭「Japannual」での日本酒テイスティング

10月2日から8日にかけて、ウィーン中心部の映画館 Filmcasino にて、墺日協会主催の日本映画祭「Japannual」が開催されました。

多くの来場者で賑わう中、映画の上映の合間に佐賀県の松浦一酒造様と基山商店様の日本酒を来場者の皆様にご紹介する機会をいただきました。

日本の映画祭ということもあり、日本文化に関心のある方や日本酒がお好きな方も多く、それぞれの銘柄を楽しみながら味わっていらっしゃいました。

蔵元の方々が現地にいらっしゃったこともあり、来場者の皆さんが熱心に質問をされる姿が印象的で、私自身もとても嬉しく、心温まる時間となりました。

今回のイベントを通じて、多くの方々と日本酒を囲みながら交流のひとときを過ごすことができましたことを大変光栄に思います。

この貴重な機会をくださった皆様、そしてご一緒させていただいた蔵元の皆様に、心から感謝いたします。

Hello everyone.
This is Hikari Saito, 2023 Miss Sake Japan Runner-up.

In early October 2025, Sake Week Vienna 2025 was held in Vienna, Austria.

Celebrating its fifth edition, this year’s event presented an even more extensive lineup, including Sake tastings, seminars, and Sake pairing dinners across various locations in Vienna.

During the week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a masterclass and a sake tasting, and I’m excited to share my experience with you here.

 

Masterclass: “Sake Vessels”

This masterclass was held at SHIKI Boutique in central Vienna.

 

SHIKI Boutique is a carefully curated select shop offering traditional Japanese crafts, including lacquerware, tinware, handmade knives, and exquisite ceramics. 

 

The boutique also features a “Sakethek” with a premium selection of Japanese sake, as well as an 8-seat sushi counter offering omakase dining, creating a unique space where craftsmanship and culinary culture come together.

A Glimpse of the Masterclass

During the masterclass, we explored how the choice of vessels can influence the aroma, taste, and mouthfeel of Sake.

The session began with an introduction to the basics of Sake, as well as the history and cultural context of drinking in Japan. We learned that Sake is more than just a beverage—it is deeply intertwined with Japanese culture and tradition.

Afterward, we had the opportunity to taste three different types of Sake using four  selected vessels: a traditional wooden Masu, ceramic and glass Ochoko, and a Western-style wine glass.

• Kankobai TORESE Junmai Ginjo (Kankobai Shuzo, Mie Prefecture)
• KID 40 Junmai Daiginjo (Heiwa Shuzo, Wakayama Prefecture)
• Shichihonyari KINOWA Kimoto Junmai (Tomita Shuzo, Shiga Prefecture)

It was amazing to experience how each vessel could alter the flavor, aroma, and overall impression of the same Sake, in both subtle and pronounced ways.

Participants were often surprised by how much the vessel affected their perception, and it was equally interesting to see how personal preferences varied from person to person. 

It was a meaningful experience for me, allowing me to rediscover the richness of Japanese culture and the subtle ways a vessel can transform the enjoyment of Sake.

Sake Tasting at the Film Festival “Japannual”

The Japanese Film Festival Japannual, organized by the Austrian-Japanese Association, took place from October 2nd to 8th at Filmcasino, a cinema located in the heart of Vienna.

Amid the lively crowd, we had the pleasure of introducing Japanese sake from Matsuura Ichi Brewery and Kiyama Shoten of Saga Prefecture to the guests during the breaks between film screenings.

Sake from these two breweries are available for purchase at Japanmarkt Nippon-Ya.

Since it was a Japanese film festival, many visitors were either deeply interested in Japanese culture or already fans of Sake. They enjoyed tasting each Sake variety, and it was a joy to see how engaged they were in learning more. 

The presence of the brewers on-site brought the event to life, and it was wonderful to see how engaged the visitors were in asking questions. 

I feel truly honored to have shared these moments of cultural exchange over Sake with so many people.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this valuable opportunity possible, and especially to the brewers who joined me for this event.
