Hello everyone, this is Chisato Tateno, Miss SAKE Japan 2025.
On Thursday, October 30, I had the honor of paying a courtesy visit to the new office of Ms. Akiko Santo.
Pioneer of Women Leaders
Since being first elected to the House of Councillors in 1974 at the age of 32, Ms. Santo has long been at the forefront of Japanese politics as a pioneering female leader. She served as Vice President of the House of Councillors in 2007, and in 2019, she was unanimously elected as the 32nd President of the House of Councillors. Notably, she became the first woman in Japanese political history to have held both positions. Furthermore, when she assumed leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party’s faction “Bancho Seisaku Kenkyujo (Santo faction),” she became the first female faction leader in the party’s history, taking on a significant leadership role.
Through this courtesy visit, I had the invaluable opportunity to hear directly from Ms. Santo about her many years of experience. Her words reminded me of the importance of women taking initiative in contributing to society and empowering cultural and regional development. This time strengthened my determination as I continue my activities as Miss SAKE.
Mission and Future Vision Inspired by Ms. Santo
The Miss SAKE Association has received longstanding support from Ms. Santo. In addition to serving as a judge at past Miss SAKE competitions, she also delivered remarks at the “2025 Miss SAKE Japan Final Selection” held on June 13, 2025, at The Westin Miyako Kyoto. At that time, she shared meaningful insights regarding the significance of women’s roles in society and the potential for regional revitalization through the uniqueness of sake breweries. Her message provided us with renewed perspective and encouragement.
As ambassadors who share Japanese sake and Japanese culture with the world, Miss SAKE strives to create opportunities for women to learn, grow, and shine independently. Ms. Santo is a role model who has paved the way for future female leaders in Japan. Her example serves as a guiding light for our mission. During the visit, we expressed my gratitude for her continued support, and in return, we received thoughtful guidance and encouragement for future activities. It was a truly meaningful time for reflecting on the mission and vision of Miss SAKE.
Through this visit, I gained deep insights from Ms. Santo’s journey and her influence as a female leader. I was also reminded of the importance of sharing Japanese sake and regional cultural heritage both domestically and internationally. With these learnings in mind, Miss SAKE will continue to contribute to cultural development and regional vitality, while empowering women to shine with confidence and sharing the rich appeal of Japan with the world.
