日常のサステイナブルな習慣をご紹介する、このコーナー。

今週は【洗濯】にその焦点を当てました。

私たちの衛生的な生活のために必要不可欠な洗濯ですが、この日々のアクションをめぐっては、合成洗剤による水質汚染やマイクロプラスチック汚染などの環境負荷が問題となっているのを皆さんご存じですか？

スーパーや薬局に並ぶ洗濯用洗剤は、開発段階での厳しい審査を経て「人体に悪影響はない」と判断された精鋭たちです。

ですが排水後の「環境」へのリスクはどうでしょうか。

日本では現在、産業排水に対して厳しい基準が設定されているため、昔に比べてその水質は大きく改善されていますが、一方で、生活排水については規制を設けることが難しく、たとえ処理施設を介して河川に排水されていたとしても、環境汚染を引き起こす課題は数多く残っているのがその現状です。

とくに合成洗剤は化学汚染物質として懸念が大きく、汚れを乳化して落とす効果のある界面活性剤は石油由来の原料が一般的なため、環境負荷が高いと言われております。

いくら浄化槽が発達していたとしても、排水は複雑な経路をたどって自然環境を汚染し、生き物たちの生態系を壊してしまいます。

では、できるだけ環境負荷をかけずに洗濯する方法とは？

そのためのひとつの方法は、「着たら洗う」から「汚れたら洗う」を心がけ、なるべく洗濯回数を減らすこと！
また、衣類から発生するマイクロプラスチックの流出を防ぐ洗濯ネットの導入するのも効果的だと言われております。

さらに、地球にやさしい洗剤に切り替えるのも今すぐできるアクションの一つ。

生態系に悪影響を与えないよう開発された生分解性の洗剤を選ぶことは、生活排水による影響を最小限に抑える近道と言えます。

本日ご紹介するのは、国産竹から生まれた天然成分100％の洗濯用洗剤【Bamboo Clear】。

昔の日本では灰を水に混ぜて灰汁を作り、その灰汁を使って洗濯をしていました。

そんな先人たちの知恵を活かした、安心・安全な洗剤を50年以上歴史のある竹炭の窯元と共同開発したのがこちらの洗剤になります。

原材料は「竹炭・竹炭灰、湧水」だけ。

界面活性剤、化学物質、香料ゼロの、人にも環境にも優しい洗剤です。

また使用される竹は、環境保全・森林保護の目的で計画的に伐採した竹のみを使用。

竹は約3年で成木となる為、計画的に伐採することにより資源を減らさずに活用することができる環境にやさしい素材なのです。

When we dump a capful of concentrated cleaning detergent into our laundry machine, we don’t really think much of it, especially not in an environmental sense.

After all, as far as most of us are concerned, something as common and innocuous as laundry detergent couldn’t possibly be bad for the planet.

Unfortunately detergent is far from completely harmless.

Detergents are hardly naturally occurring.

Most popular commercial brands are manufactured using synthetic chemical compounds.

This makes them very different from soap, which is made from natural substances like lye and plant saponins.

Laundry detergent is added to dirty laundry, where it does its job “lifting stains” and “preserving colors” before getting washed out, diluted, and sent down the drain with the wastewater from your washing machine.

Unfortunately, the chemicals in these detergents can have a far-reaching environmental impact.

Detergents can contain several chemical compounds that have negative environmental effects. Phosphate-containing laundry or dish detergents can react adversely.

Nitrogen in these detergents reacts with phosphorus in the water, creating nutrients that stimulate the growth of algae in freshwater.

This type of algae uses up the oxygen in the water in a process called eutrophication.

Over time, this slowly depletes the oxygen in a body of water, ruining the ecosystem.

Other detergents contain surfactants, which are chemicals that reduce the surface tension of oil and water.

They happen to be highly toxic to aquatic life thus break down the mucus layer that coats fish, protecting them from parasites and bacteria.

Then, what are the eco-friendly alternatives for laundry detergent.

You do not have to make your own laundry detergent to wash your clothes more gently and skin-friendly.

[Bamboo Clear] is a hundred percent natural detergent made in Japan.

It is made only using bamboo charcoal, bamboo charcoal ash  and water. 

Do you ever wonder how our ancestors used to wash their clothes?

Believe it or not, ancestors from Japan used hardwood ash to clean their laundry, as the plants are rich in saponins.

Furthermore, bamboo is an incredibly renewable and versatile crop.

Although it’s tough like wood, it’s actually a type of grass and some species can grow by over a meter a day.

Plus, a bamboo requires very little water and doesn’t need to be sprayed with pesticides or fertilizers to grow.

Nevertheless bamboo releases 35 per cent more oxygen into the air compared to trees of the same size.

In conclusion, why not try an eco-detergent which will be phosphate-free, biodegradable, and not tested on animals, and most likely in recyclable or recycled packaging.

It’s just nice to know you’re not causing the eutrophication of fresh water through phosphate residue, or poisoning aquatic organisms and algae!
