[for English speakers]

Hello everyone. This is Aya Amelia Kodama, 2018 Miss SAKE runner up. I joined a sake brewery tour held on March 2nd.

This tour was a day trip to sake breweries in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture; the Fuji-nishiki Brewery, and Fuji-Takasago Brewery; with the chance to experience the Fujiyama Asama Taisha, and the local cuisine, “Fujinomiya Yakisoba.” While on the bus, Mr. Shinobu Nimura, the especially sake-experienced bus tour conductor, explained us about sake in an easy-to-understand manner based on the theme of “travel and sake.”

First of all, we visited the Fuji-nishiki Brewery, founded in 1688, first began for use in festivals. Now they handle over 200,000 bottles a year. They are involved in making rice in their own premises, and 4% of whole use are their own rice. Their original sake “Tokubetsu Jyunmai Homarefuji” which uses 100% of their own sake rice ‘Homarefuji,’ received the highest gold award in a sake competition in 2014.

Besides Homarefuji, they carefully consider which sake rice to use, such as Yamadanishiki, Omachi, Aiyama for each sake, which I found interesting how they are specially concious about sake rice.

We next visited the Fuji-Takasago Shuzo, founded in 1830, which uses the natural underflowing water of Mt. Fuji for the water for sake brewing. The water comes down slowly from the top of the mountain carefully filtered for over 100 years, which helps the sake to become gentle in taste. Their sake, characterized by their ‘Yamahai’ style brewing, is filled of history, tradition, and techniques.

I was stunned when I tasted them; with their sensational fragrance and the deep flavor; and was surprised of their abundant variety, such as sake which pairs with their local food Fujinomiya Yakisoba, and a new-type sake made from Yogurt.

At “Jinenbo”, famous for local cuisine, we got to try Fujinomiya Yakisoba, which won the gold medal and the Prime Minister’s Prize in the B-1 gourmet competition. We enjoyed local gourmet together with local sake, and it was a great pleasure to get to experience this special activity.

Last but not least, we visited the Fujiyama Honmiya Asama Taisha. This is the main shrine of all 1,300 Asama Shrines across the country, and the oldest in the Tokai region. It is registered as a World Cultural Heritage as one of the components of “Mt. Fuji-Objects of Faith and Sources of Art.” Surrounded by the grand scenery, we took a walk through the precincts of the shrine.

This tour was a special planning to enjoy the whole sake culture in the Fujinomiya area in Shizuoka Prefecture. I felt grateful to have had many participants, every one of them as ‘sake lovers,’ to enjoy the tour. Thank you very much for everyone involved in this tour, for this splendidly wonderful opportunity.
