2月初旬、一般社団法人山陰インバウンド機構様主催のイベント「山陰ディスカバリーナイト」に参加させていただきました。
山陰インバウンド機構様は国内外への山陰(鳥取県、島根県)の観光情報発信、外国メディア関係者とのネットワーク構築・関係強化に向けた様々なイベントを開催されております。
今回は、島根県にゆかりのある小泉八雲の「怪談」と鳥取県にゆかりのある水木しげるの「妖怪」をテーマに、山陰の歴史、暮らし、地域の自然、文化等を欧米豪のジャーナリストの方、旅行関係者の方々をお招きし魅力発信を行うイベントでした。
このイベントでは、日本酒を通じて文化を伝えるだけでなく、山陰地方の魅力をより広い視点で発信することができました。
また、他のブースでは山陰の歴史や芸術、観光地を紹介されており、山陰の魅力を伝える場として素晴らしい機会でした。
私は山陰日本酒ブースにて、鳥取・島根両県の地元蔵元様から提供された多彩な日本酒を来場者に試飲いただき、その特徴や製造過程を紹介させていただきました。日本酒に興味を持つ海外の方も多く訪れ、
単に試飲を楽しむだけでなく、熱心に質問をしてくださったり、酒造りの背景に興味を持ってくださり、それぞれの酒の個性や違いを熱心に学ばれようとする姿に嬉しくなりました。
会場には約80名の方がいらっしゃり、アメリカやイギリス、カナダ等の旅行会社、トラベルライター、オーストラリアやニュージーランド出身の旅行業界方、日本の旅行業界関係者の方等にお会いしました。
「まだあまり知られていない山陰の魅力を実際に山陰で体験しながら発信していきたい」、「日本酒は海外からの関心も高く、造りの背景を知ることのできる蔵見学も非常に人気が高まっている」というような嬉しいお言葉もございました。
同じ山陰でも、試飲の度に異なる味わいに、多くの方がWow!という嬉しい驚きの反応をくださいました。
今後もこのような海外の方向けのイベントにて、まだまだ知られていない日本酒の奥深さや山陰の魅力を伝えていき、多くの海外からの方に山陰に訪れていただきたいと思います。
また、山陰の日本酒も各国へのお土産にしていただき、世界中で更に嬉しい驚きが生まれることを願っています。

“San’in Discovery Night”
I had the opportunity to participate in the “San’in Discovery Night” event, organized by the San’in Inbound Organization.
The San’in Inbound Organization actively promotes tourism in the San’in region (Tottori and Shimane Prefectures) both domestically and internationally. They also organize various events to build and strengthen networks with foreign media professionals.
This event focused on the themes of “Kaidan” (Ghost Stories) by Lafcadio Hearn, who is connected to Shimane, and “Yokai” (Supernatural Creatures) by Shigeru Mizuki, who has ties to Tottori. It was designed to introduce the history, lifestyle, nature, and culture of the San’in region to journalists and travel industry professionals from the US, Europe, and Australia to promote Sanin region to overseas.
Through this event, we were able to share not only the culture of Japanese sake but also the broader appeal of the San’in region from multiple perspectives.
Other booths introduced the history, art, and tourist attractions of the region, making this event a wonderful opportunity to showcase the many charms of San’in.
At the San’in Sake Booth, I introduced a variety of local sake from breweries in both Tottori and Shimane. Many overseas visitors showed great interest in Japanese sake, not only enjoying the tasting but also eagerly asking questions and learning about the brewing process. It was exciting to see their enthusiasm as they explored the unique characteristics and differences of each sake.
The event welcomed around 80 attendees, including professionals from American travel agencies, travel writers from EU, a Oceania native working for a UK travel company, and Japanese travel industry representatives. Many expressed a strong interest in experiencing and promoting the lesser-known charms of San’in. Some also shared encouraging insights, such as the growing international interest in sake brewery tours, where visitors can learn about the brewing process firsthand.
Even within the San’in region, each sake had a distinct taste, and many visitors reacted with delighted “Wow!” moments during the tasting.
Moving forward, I hope to continue participating in events like this, sharing the depth of Japanese sake and the hidden gems of San’in with the world—creating more moments of pleasant surprise across the globe.
