Miss SAKE joined the “ANA Stage” at the National Cherry Blossom Festival held in Washington, D.C.

皆様、こんにちは。2023 Miss SAKE 準グランプリ 齋藤ひかりです。

日毎に春らしくなってまいりました3月下旬、アメリカ・ワシントンD.C.で開催されたNational Cherry Blossom Festival（全米桜祭り）に、2022 Miss SAKE Japan 磯部里紗さんと一緒に参加させていただきました。

National Cherry Blossom Festival 

National Cherry Blossom Festival（全米桜祭り）は、毎年春にワシントンD.C.で開催されるお祭りで、1912年に日本から日米友好のシンボルとして3000本の桜の木が贈られたことを記念し、日米両国の長年にわたる友好関係をお祝いしています。ワシントンD.C.の桜並木はアメリカでも有名で、毎年150万人以上の人々が国内外から訪れます。

お祭りは4週間にわたって開催され、桜の木の鑑賞や花火大会、パレード、音楽イベント、日本文化の展示やパフォーマンスなど、さまざまなアクティビティがあります。お祭りの期間中、街中のレストランやお店では桜のデコレーションが施され、街全体が桜色に染まります（’CITY IN BLOOM‘）。また、自宅の庭や窓のデコレーションをした方の中から優秀賞を決めるコンテスト（’PETAL PORCHES‘）も開催されています。桜の花が満開に咲き誇り、街に溢れるイベントを楽しむ人々から春の訪れに対する喜びを感じ、私も心が躍りました。

TIDAL BASIN WELCOME AREA & ANA STAGE

National Cherry Blossom Festivalについてインターネットで検索すると、多くのウェブサイトやブログでおすすめのフォトスポットが提案されていました。これらのスポットの多くは、私たちも出演させていただいた「ANA Stage」が設置されている、ワシントンD.C.の中心部に位置する国立公園、ナショナル・モールにあります。お写真と併せてご紹介いたします。

ナショナル・モール

ナショナル・モールは、ワシントンD.C.の中心部にある国立公園で、歴史的な記念碑や博物館、政府機関が立ち並ぶエリアにあります。リンカーン記念堂、ワシントン記念塔、連邦議会議事堂など、多くのアメリカの歴史的な建造物やモニュメントが点在していることから観光名所としても大変有名です。私が伺った3月24日はお天気も良く、公園内の広場では凧揚げを楽しむ人々もいました。

Tidal Basin & “ANA Stage”

ANA様が主要スポンサーを務める「ANA Stage」が設置された入江、Tidal Basin（タイダル・ベイスン）の周辺には、満開の桜の木々が美しく並んでおり、私もその美しさに見惚れてしまいました。このエリアは公園内でも特に桜が見事に咲く名所ということもあり、多くの人々で賑わっていました。すれ違う際にはお着物に対するお褒めの言葉もたくさんいただきました。

「ANA Stage」では、お祭りを盛り上げるべく100を超えるパフォーマンスが予定され、アメリカや日本など様々なカルチャーやジャンルのパフォーマンスが行われています。大変光栄なことに、私たちも日本酒と日本文化のグローバルアンバサダーとしてステージで、皆さんに日本酒や日本の文化についてお話する機会を頂きました。

 

「皆さんは日本酒についてご存知ですか？また、日本酒を飲んだことがありますか？」という磯部さんの問いかけに、「知っています！」「日本酒が好きです！」という反応をいただき、日本酒の認知度の高さに驚きつつ、その声に心から嬉しく思いました。

また、桜の花が咲く季節に家族や友人と集まって桜の木の下で食事やお酒を楽しむ「お花見」や、農作物の豊作や健康を祈願するためにお酒を捧ぐ日本酒の文化的一面についてもご紹介いたしました。今回の出演は私たちにとって、日本酒が単なるアルコール飲料ではなく、私たち日本人の文化や伝統に根ざしたものでもあることをお伝えできた素晴らしい機会となりました。

アメリカ国立公園局は、老朽化した防波堤を修繕するために約300本の桜を伐採し、その後に再び450本の桜の木を植樹する計画を発表しました。また、公園内では「Cherry Blossom Protector」という缶バッジを胸に付けている方が多くいらっしゃり、多くの人々がワシントンD.C.の桜を心から愛していることを感じました。歴史ある桜を守るために、地元の方々が熱心に取り組んでいる姿に触れ、心が温かくなる瞬間でした。

Hello, everyone.

I’m Hikari Saito, 2023 Miss SAKE Japan Runner-up.

In late March, I had the honor to participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., USA, together with Ms. Risa Isobe, 2022 Miss SAKE Japan.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is held in Washington, D.C., every year during the cherry blossom season. It celebrates the longstanding friendship between the United States and Japan by honoring the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Japan in 1912, as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. The cherry blossom trees in Washington, D.C., are famous throughout the United States and attract more than 1.5 million visitors from around the country and the world every year.

The festival spans four weeks and includes a variety of activities, including cherry blossom viewing, fireworks, parades, music events, exhibitions of Japanese culture and performances. During the festival, restaurants and shops throughout the city are decorated with cherry flowers, and the whole city is bloomed with cherry blossoms. I could feel the coming of spring from the smiles of the people enjoying the events that flooded the city.

 

If you search the Internet about this festival, several websites and blogs suggest various photogenic spots around the city. Many of the featured spots are located at the National Mall, a national park in the heart of Washington, D.C..

Around the Tidal Basin, where the ANA Stage was located, there were many beautiful flowering cherry trees. This area is one of the most famous places in the park where cherry blossoms bloom beautifully. When we passed this place, we received many compliments about the kimono, which made us very delighted.

We were honored to have the opportunity to talk about Sake and Japanese culture as a global ambassador of sake and Japanese culture at ANA Stage, where over 100 performances are held during the festival.

We introduced not only sake as an alcohol beverage, but also cultural aspects such as “Hanami” (cherry blossom viewing), where people gather with family and friends to enjoy food and alcohol under the cherry trees during the cherry blossom season, and the custom of using Sake to pray for a good crop and good health. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to share that Sake is not just an alcoholic beverage, but also rooted in our Japanese culture and traditions.

The National Park Service has announced their upcoming plans to cut down about 300 cherry trees to repair the environment around them. As soon as they complete it, they are going to plant another 450 trees there. I felt that many people truly loved the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., seeing people wearing  “Cherry Blossom Protector” badges. I was touched by the local people’s efforts to preserve the historic cherry blossoms for future generations.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Miyake, Minister at the Embassy of Japan in the United States, Mr. Kamitsubo, Vice President & General Manager at ANA Washington, D.C. Branch, Ms. Hirai from Happi Enterprises, LLC, and all those involved for granting us such an exceptional opportunity.
