2023 Miss SAKE Japan Kotoko Yamada attended the National Day Reception Celebrating the 64th Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan hosted by the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines (English Below)

 

皆さま、こんにちは。

2023 Miss SAKE Japan 山田琴子です。

2023年2月23日、フィリピンの首都マニラにあります、グランド ハイアット マニラ（BGC）にて在フィリピン日本国大使館主催の天皇誕生日祝賀レセプションに弊社団代表理事 大西美香同行の元、2023 Miss SAKE Japan 山田琴子が参加いたしました。

祝賀レセプションでは、29ものブースが設置され、大変光栄なことに日本酒ブースにてフィリピンの方々をはじめとした多くの来賓の方々へ日本酒をご紹介する役割を賜りました。

この日、会場にはフィリピンの官房長官ルーカス・ベルサミン様を始めたとした政治界、多くの企業の方々、文化人、メディア、各国の大使など様々な方がいらっしゃっており、総勢1000名を超える方が日本の天皇誕生日をお祝いに来てくださったこと大変嬉しく思いました。

会場にいらっしゃるフィリピン人の男性の方は伝統衣装である「バロン・タガログ」を着ていらっしゃいました。バナナやパイナップルの繊維を使用し織られているこの衣装は、少し透け感がある布地に細かい刺繍が施されております。

フィリピン人の女性の方は、「テルノ」という肩の膨らみが特徴的な伝統衣装を着ていらっしゃる方が多くいらっしゃいました。

私はこの度橙色のお振袖を来て伺ったのですが、皆さまお振袖の絵柄や染め方に大変興味を示してくださり、フィリピンの皆様とお互いの伝統衣装を紹介しあいことを通して、お互いの文化を知ることができMiss SAKEとしてお振袖で活動し、世界で日本の心をお伝えできますこと嬉しく思いました。

会では、駐フィリピン特命全権大使 越川和彦様より日本とフィリピンの繋がりについてもご紹介がございました。2023年は、フィリピンからマルコス大統領が日本を訪問し、岸田首相がフィリピンを訪問しとてもフィリピンと日本の友情が強まった年であり、コロナ後のフィリピン人の日本への観光客数は過去最大であったことから日本への関心が高まっているとのことでした。

その後、ステージではフィリピンの官房長官ルーカス・ベルサミン様より乾杯のご発声があった後、琉球舞踊や空手などが披露され笑顔と活気に溢れる会となりました。

 

日本酒ブースでは、「陸奥八仙」で有名な青森県 八戸酒造様と、「山形正宗」の株式会社 水戸部酒造様も日本よりいらっしゃりご一緒させていただきました。

日本酒に馴染みがない方には、お好きな味わいや、一緒に頂かれるお食事を伺いながらご紹介をするように心がけました。

途中、あまり華やかなお酒は好きではないという大使の方に落ち着いた旨みが美味しい純米酒をご紹介したのですが、大変気に入ってくださり、その後他の国の大使の方々をお連れくださいました。私のご紹介で今までその方が苦手だと思っていた日本酒に、自分でも楽しめる種類もあるという発見をお手伝いでき大変光栄な出来事でした。

会の途中で、隣で日本産水産物のご紹介をされていらっしゃいましたJETRO様のお刺身と日本酒をフィリピンの官房長官ルーカス・ベルサミン様をはじめとしたご来賓の方々に直接ご紹介する機会をいただきました。

ご提供させていただいた日本酒を大変気に入ってくださり、是非2本目をいただきたいという感想までいただき、私の大好きな日本酒をフィリピンの方が美味しいと飲んでくださっているところは大変Miss SAKEとして誇らしかったです。

昨年の10月に引き続き、継続してフィリピンをMiss SAKEとして訪問し、フィリピンの政財界を代表する方々や各国の外交官に日本酒をご紹介させて頂けたことは、今後も忘れられない大変貴重な経験となりました。

Hello everyone,

I’m Kotoko Yamada, Miss SAKE Japan 2023.

On February 23, 2023, I had the honor of attending the National Day Reception Celebrating the 64th Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan hosted by the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, which took place at the Grand Hyatt Manila (BGC) in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. 

At the reception, there were 29 booths set up, and I was privileged to be stationed at the Japanese sake booth, where I had the responsibility of introducing Japanese sake to guests, including many Filipinos. The venue was graced by distinguished guests from the political arena, various companies, cultural figures, media, and ambassadors from different countries, with over 1000 attendees celebrating the Emperor’s birthday.

Many Filipino men at the event were dressed in traditional attire known as “Barong Tagalog” made from fibers of bananas or pineapples, with intricate embroidery on slightly translucent fabric. On the other hand, many Filipino women wore the “Terno,” a traditional attire characterized by its distinctive shoulder puff. 

I was dressed in an orange furisode kimono for the occasion, and I was delighted to see the interest shown by the attendees in both Japanese and Filipino traditional clothing. Through mutual introductions of our respective cultural attires, I felt privileged to represent Miss SAKE and share our cultural heritage, hoping to convey the essence of Japan to the world.

During the event, Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa shared insights into the strong ties between Japan and the Philippines. He highlighted significant events such as the visits of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to Japan and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to the Philippines in 2023, underscoring the deepening friendship between the two nations. Ambassador Koshikawa also mentioned the surge in Filipino tourists visiting Japan post-pandemic, with July 2023 recording the highest number in ASEAN countries, emphasizing Japan’s enduring appeal to the Filipino people.

The evening was further enriched by cultural performances, including Ryukyu dance and karate demonstrations, showcasing the vibrancy and warmth of the occasion.

At the Japanese sake booth, we had the honor of hosting representatives from renowned sake breweries such as Hachinohe Shuzo from Aomori Prefecture, and Mitobe Shuzo from Yamagata Prefecture. We made an effort to introduce Japanese sake to those unfamiliar with it, tailoring our recommendations based on their preferences and accompanying meals. I had the pleasure of introducing a smooth and flavorful Junmai sake to an ambassador who initially expressed a preference for less flamboyant drinks, and it was a gratifying experience to see him come back with other ambassadors and introduce the Sake to them.

During the reception, I had the opportunity to directly introduce Japanese sashimi provided by JETRO and Japanese Sake to distinguished guests, including His Excellency Executive Secretary Hon. Lucas Bersamin. They were delighted with the sake we offered and expressed a desire for more, reaffirming the appreciation for Japanese sake among Filipino dignitaries.

Continuing my visit to the Philippines as Miss SAKE, following last October, and being able to introduce Japanese sake to prominent figures in the political and business sectors of the Philippines and various diplomats, has been an unforgettable and impactful experience.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa and everyone at the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines for this invaluable opportunity. As Miss SAKE, I am committed to passionately delivering the beauty of Japanese sake and culture to an even wider audience in the future.
