2022 Miss SAKE Japan 磯部里紗です。
アメリカ合衆国ワシントンD.C.に滞在中の2024年3月25日、在米日本大使館をはじめ、在米ポーランド大使館、在米コロンビア大使館、在米メキシコ大使館に表敬訪問に伺って参りましたので、その報告をさせて頂きます。
在アメリカ合衆国日本国大使館
まず最初に、在アメリカ合衆国日本国大使館 特命全権大使 山田重夫様に、弊社団 代表理事 大西美香と表敬訪問に伺いました。
山田大使は、以前駐米公使や総合外交政策局長を歴任され、ワシントンD.C.勤務は3回目でいらっしゃるそうです。
全米桜祭りのオープニングセレモニーでは、ユーモアを交えた素晴らしいスピーチで現地の観客を魅了し、私も大変感銘を受けました。
日本を代表して、日米両国の友好と協力関係を深める重要な役割を務めていらっしゃる山田大使と、多岐にわたるお話をさせて頂けたこと、大変光栄でした。
特に、お手土産に日本から持参した日本酒を差し上げたところ、その酒蔵の地域のことやGIのこと、お酒の味わいのことなど、山田大使から興味深く質問していただいたことが、大変印象的でした。
山田大使が日頃の外交活動の中で、海外の要人や来賓に対して、日本の文化や地域、歴史、食文化を丁寧にご紹介されている様子がとても伝わってきました。
外交の最前線にいらっしゃる大使の足元にも及びませんが、私もMiss SAKEとして、日本酒を通じて日本の魅力を伝え、微力ながらも日本と海外の友好関係の発展に寄与できるように、一層努めて参りたいと実感しました。
この度は大変ご多忙のところお時間を頂戴し、誠に有難うございました。
在米ポーランド大使館
在米ポーランド大使館では、7名の女性職員の方々が出迎えてくださり、Miss SAKEの活動について、振袖や着物について、興味深そうにお話を聞いてくださいました。
また、つい最近日本に旅行された職員の方もいらっしゃって、楽しい思い出を共有してくださったり、色々なお話をしてくださいました。
ポーランドは、音楽コンクールの最高峰であるショパン国際ピアノコンクールが毎年開催されるように、音楽で大変有名な国であり、大使館のメイン・サロンには、大きなスタインウェイ・ピアノが置かれています。このピアノは、第二次世界大戦中に有名なピアニストイグナシー・ヤン・パデレフスキ氏から大使館に贈られたものとのことです。
昨年のショパンコンクールでは日本人が2名も入賞を果たしたように、たくさんの素晴らしい日本人の音楽家の方々が世界で活躍されているので、今後日本とポーランド間で音楽分野の交流がより一層促進することを祈っております。
お手土産には、『Polish Women』という、様々な分野で活躍したポーランド人女性のお話がまとまっている本を頂戴しました。エベレストの登頂に成功した史上3人目の女性である、ポーランド人の女性登山家Wanda Rutkiewicz氏など9名のストーリーが描かれていて、とても素敵な本でした。
在米コロンビア大使館
次に、在米コロンビア大使館をご訪問させていただきました。
1908年5月25日、まさにワシントンD.C.で「日本コロンビア修好通商航海条約」が調印され、日本・コロンビア両国間の国交が開かれました。
今では貿易を通じた経済的な交流が盛んで、日本からは自動車や機械類、電気機器などが輸出され、コロンビアからはコーヒー、カカオなどの農産物や資源を輸入しています。中でも、母の日には欠かせないカーネーションの半数以上はコロンビアから輸入しているそうです。
大使館に入ると、コーヒーの良い香りがしました。皆様ご存知の通り、コロンビアは世界的に有名なコーヒー豆の生産国です。
コロンビアを南北に縦断するアンデス山脈の麓につづく緑豊かな丘陵地帯は、美味しいコーヒーづくりに欠かせない条件をクリアした稀少な土地です。さらにコロンビアでは地域によって雨季と乾期が異なるため、一年を通じて新鮮なコーヒーの豆が収穫できます。
美味しいコーヒーを頂きながら、コロンビア人ならではの、コーヒーの煎り方についてのこだわりをお伺いし、大変面白かったです。
お手土産に頂戴したコーヒーを自宅でエスプレッソにしてみましたが、深煎りでコクがあり、とても美味しかったです。
在米メキシコ大使館・文化協会
最後に、メキシコ文化協会（Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington DC）を訪問させて頂きました。
1990年の設立以来ワシントンの中心部で繁栄する芸術センターで、メキシコの豊かな文化遺産をアメリカの観客に紹介することを目的とした施設です。メキシコ大使館の文化部門として機能しており、メキシコの芸術、音楽、映画、文学、歴史などを展示・紹介するイベントやプログラムを開催しているようです。
1910年に建てられた歴史的な建物の中には、メキシコ人芸術家ロベルト・クエバ・デル・リオ氏の大きな壁画が一面に広がっていたり、メキシコの各州の紋章が描かれたタイルが飾られていたり、メキシコの歴史や文化を感じました。
また、メキシコ桜と呼ばれているハカランダについても教えて頂きました。
1912年、当時東京市長の尾崎行雄氏はアメリカに桜の木3千本を寄贈した同時期に、メキシコでも両国の友好の証として桜を植える計画があったそうです。
そこで日本の外務省がメキシコに移住していた庭師の松本辰五郎氏に意見を求めたところ、メキシコシティーの気候では桜は育ちにくいと判断し、代わりにブラジル原産の「ハカランダ」を提案したそうです。
今ではハカランダはメキシコ全土に広がり、桜とは異なる色形ですが、花の咲く時期や並木道、そして薄紫の花が散る様子は桜に似ており、「メキシコ桜」と呼ばれ、人々の目を楽しませているそうです。
最後に
このように、様々な国の大使館へのご訪問を通じて、世界中の大使館が集まるアメリカの政治の中心であるワシントンD.C.だからこその経験をさせて頂きました。
どの国の大使館を訪問しても、日本酒のことや振袖のことに大きな関心を持って頂き、改めてMiss SAKEのアンバサダーとしての使命を感じた1日でした。
大使館の皆様の温かいおもてなしにも、心より感謝申し上げます。

2022 Miss SAKE 磯部里紗
Hello everyone.
My name is Risa Isobe, the 2022 Miss SAKE Japan.
On March 25, 2024, during my stay in Washington D.C., United States, I had the honor of making courtesy visits to the Embassy of Japan, the Embassy of Poland, the Embassy of Colombia, and the Embassy of Mexico. Here is a report of my visits.
Embassy of Japan in the United States of America
First, I had the honor of visiting His Excellency Shigeo Yamada, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at the Embassy of Japan in the United States, together with Mika Onishi, our association’s representative director. Ambassador Yamada has previously served as Minister at the Japanese Embassy in the U.S. and Director-General of the Foreign Policy Bureau. This is his third posting in Washington D.C.
At the opening ceremony of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, he captivated the local audience with a wonderful speech filled with humor, and I was deeply impressed. It was a great honor to have a wide-ranging conversation with Ambassador Yamada, who plays an important role in deepening the friendship and cooperation between the US and Japan.
In particular, when we presented him with sake brought from Japan, we were glad that he asked us many interesting questions about the region of the brewery, the GI (Geographical Indication), and the taste of the sake. I felt that Ambassador Yamada, through his daily diplomatic activities, carefully introduces Japanese culture, regions, history, and culinary culture to foreign dignitaries and guests. I felt a renewed determination to continue conveying the charm of Japan through sake as Miss SAKE and contribute, even in a small way, to the development of friendly relations between Japan and other countries.

Embassy of Poland in the United States
At the Embassy of Poland in the United States, seven female staff members warmly welcomed us and showed great interest in Miss SAKE’s activities and the stories about the furisode and kimono. One of the staff members had recently traveled to Japan and shared her enjoyable memories and various stories with us.
Poland is a country well-known for its classical music, hosting the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition annually. In the main salon of the embassy, there is a large Steinway piano, which was a gift from the famous pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski during World War II.
Given that two Japanese contestants won prizes at last year’s Chopin Competition, many outstanding Japanese musicians are active worldwide. I hope that musical exchanges between Japan and Poland will continue to flourish.
As a souvenir, I received a book titled “Polish Women,” which tells the stories of Polish women who have excelled in various fields. It includes nine stories, such as that of Wanda Rutkiewicz, the third woman to successfully climb Mount Everest. It is a truly wonderful book.
Embassy of Colombia in the United States
Next, I visited the Embassy of Colombia in the United States.
On May 25, 1908, in Washington D.C., the “Japan-Colombia Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation” was signed, establishing diplomatic relations between Japan and Colombia. Today, there is vibrant economic exchange through trade, with Japan exporting automobiles, machinery, and electrical equipment, and Colombia exporting agricultural products and resources such as coffee and cocoa. Notably, more than half of the carnations used for Mother’s Day are imported from Colombia.
Upon entering the embassy, I was greeted by the pleasant aroma of coffee. As everyone knows, Colombia is a world-renowned producer of coffee beans. The lush hills at the foot of the Andes, which run north to south through Colombia, provide the ideal conditions for producing delicious coffee. Moreover, since the rainy and dry seasons vary by region in Colombia, fresh coffee beans can be harvested throughout the year.
While enjoying a delicious cup of coffee, I learned about the Colombian methods of roasting coffee, which was very interesting. I made espresso at home with the coffee I received as a gift, and it was rich and flavorful, truly delicious.
Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington D.C.
Finally, I visited the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington D.C. Since its establishment in 1990, this vibrant arts center in the heart of Washington has aimed to introduce Mexico’s rich cultural heritage to American audiences. It functions as the cultural arm of the Mexican Embassy, hosting events and programs that showcase Mexican art, music, film, literature, and history.
Inside the historic building, built in 1910, there is a large mural by Mexican artist Roberto Cueva del Río, as well as tiles decorated with the emblems of various Mexican states, evoking a sense of Mexico’s history and culture.
I also learned about the jacaranda, known as the “Mexican cherry blossom.” In 1912, around the same time when Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo donated 3,000 cherry trees to the US, there was a plan to plant cherry trees in Mexico as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. However, the Japanese Foreign Ministry consulted with Tatsugoro Matsumoto, a gardener living in Mexico, who advised that cherry trees would not thrive in Mexico City’s climate. Instead, he suggested the jacaranda, a tree native to Brazil. Today, jacarandas have spread throughout Mexico. Although their color and shape differ from cherry blossoms, their blooming season, lined avenues, and the sight of their pale purple petals falling resemble cherry blossoms, earning them the nickname “Mexican cherry blossom.”
Lastly…
Through these visits to various embassies, I had experiences unique to Washington D.C., the political center of the United States, where embassies from all over the world are gathered. At every embassy I visited, there was great interest in sake and furisode, reinforcing my sense of mission as an ambassador for Miss SAKE.
I am deeply grateful for the warm hospitality extended by all the embassies.
And I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Minister Miyake and Mr. Sugiyama at the Embassy of Japan in the United States for graciously arranging this wonderful opportunity for the visit.
