[English below]

Participating in the 11th Nadeshiko Program “Thinking about the Future of Japanese Agriculture through the Rice Planting Experience

2022 Miss SAKE Fukuoka MOERI SHIRAISHI

[English below]

Hello everyone, my name is Moeri Shiraishi from 2022 Miss SAKE Fukuoka.

I am pleased to report that I recently participated in the 11th Nadeshiko Program.

In this article, I would like to report on the special lecture on rice and sake rice given by Kanto Koshin Kubota and the rice planting experience.

## Lecture by Kanto Koshin Kubota

This Nadeshiko Program was held in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture!

Kanto Koshin Kubota Corporation has kindly given us time to learn about rice cultivation, which is essential for sake brewing.

Kubota is a world-renowned company, and although I knew of them, I did not really understand what exactly they do for a living.

Kubota is a company with a long history, having been founded in 1890.

Kubota has been working to solve social issues related to food, water, and the environment, and is developing a wide range of businesses with three pillars: “Resource Development Solutions,” “Water Environment Platform,” and “Smart Agriculture.

In particular, we were deeply interested in “Smart Agriculture” in this program.

The environment surrounding Japanese farmers is severe, with a serious labor shortage due to the aging and shrinking population, but Kubota is working to solve this problem by providing solutions such as precision agriculture using data and agricultural machinery that promotes automation and unmanned production.

Kubota has been supporting Japanese agriculture so that we can continue to eat rice, which is the staple food of the Japanese people and highly nutritious.

Among the various solutions they provide, they are now particularly focusing on “Agri-Robo”.

Rice planting is a heavy work that requires precise work and bending over if it is done manually, since the way the seedlings are planted changes the way they grow. This is where rice transplanters come in handy.

We were shown a demonstration of the “Agri-Robo” during our rice planting experience later on, and it is a very good machine!

It can plant seedlings accurately and evenly, and can also spray fertilizers and chemicals at the same time as planting. I was told that all the technology was developed in-house, and I felt that Kubota is the “world’s leading manufacturer of rice transplanters.

I am very excited to see how the agri-robot will change the Japanese agricultural scene in the future. We are excited to see how the agri-robot will change Japan’s agricultural scene in the future.

## Rice planting experience

After the lecture, we moved by bus to the rice-planting experience!

The rain of the previous day was a lie, as the sun peeked through the clouds and we were blessed with good weather.

Kubota kindly provided us with work clothes and hats so that we could work in the same attire as their employees.

Putting on boots and stepping into the rice paddies, we felt our feet sink into the soft soil.

It’s just a simple thing, but it feels so fresh and reassuring, as if you are enveloped by the soil.

People today, including myself, do not have many opportunities to come into contact with soil and greenery on a daily basis, but our ancestors have been living with nature for a long time. Perhaps that is why we can return to a somewhat nostalgic and relaxed feeling.

We receive a seedling and move forward step by step, our feet caught in the mud.

We took two or three seedlings and planted them in bunches in the rice paddies at equal spacing along a predetermined line.

They carefully plant the seedlings with the hope that they will grow into large, magnificent ears.

After the work is done, the sense of accomplishment is quite special.

After the rice planting experience this time, I realized once again that the rice I usually eat is born from such small seedlings, and I felt a strange feeling.

Working with my own hands made me realize how little I know about rice cultivation and Japanese agriculture.

Rice is essential to sake production.

As MissSAKE, which is responsible for promoting sake, I felt I had a great opportunity to learn more about rice cultivation and the environment surrounding it.

We would like to thank everyone at Kanto Koshin Kubota for giving us their valuable time even though it was a holiday, and for their warm attention to detail.

Please refer to the Chunichi Shimbun newspaper for a report on this program.
