2月9日にインド ムンバイにて『2024 Miss SAKE India大会』が開催され、私は日本のMiss SAKEの代表、そして審査員として出席をさせていただきました。
2020年に開催されました第1回Miss SAKE Indiaに引き続き、再度２回目のMiss SAKE Indiaが開催されましたこと、大変嬉しく思っております。
＜2024 Miss SAKE India大会＞
2024 Miss SAKE India大会は、インドにおいて「くふ楽」を代表とする飲食業・ホテル業を手掛けるヒロハマ・インディア の本多康二郎様の主催にて開催されました。
2024 Miss SAKE Indiaは、30名を超える方々より応募があり、今回のファイナリストの中にはインドの別の地方から飛行機でこのためにいらしてくださった方もおり、大変この大会へかける思いが強い日本が大好きな女性が集まりました。
会場には、多くのメディアの方、インドでの飲食関係者の方、インフルエンサーの方、そして駐インドイスラエル総領事 Kobbi Shoshani様もいらっしゃりインド国内での今大会への注目の高さを実感いたしました。

大会は、事前に実施されたオンラインでの面談、SNSでのいいね数、そして大会当日の審査員の点数を総合的に合計した点数にて審査が行われました。
当日の審査は、在インド日本大使館より宇藤展祥様、ムンバイ日本人会より会長 近藤辰巳様、インドにて女性の活躍推進のお仕事をされておりますMagicka ディレクター Raizy Bedi様、インドにて日本酒の輸出事業にかかわられている江岡美香様と私を含めた５名で実施いたしました。
大会は、先日もお世話になったインドと日本を繋ぐ『Connect India Japan』にて情報発信を様々な媒体にて行われておりますヌプール・テワリ様の素晴らしい司会によって始まりました。まず初めに、主催の本多様よりこの大会に込めた思いや審査についてご紹介をいただきました。その後、私よりMiss SAKEの活動の説明や、2024 Miss SAKE Indiaの方に担っていただく役割をご説明したのちに、日本酒についての簡単な基礎講義を実施させていただきました。
その後、会場にいらっしゃっておりました酒蔵様より蔵と日本酒についてのご紹介がございました。この日、2024 Miss SAKE Indiaには、宮崎酒造店様（千葉県）、薄井商店様（長野県）、千古乃岩酒造様（岐阜県）、希ジャパン様が、いらっしゃっており、それぞれのお酒に関するご説明や、日本のお米やお水に関するテロワールのお話をしてくださり、会場にいたインドの方にとって日本酒知識を深める素晴らしい機会となりました。
＜ファイナリスト7名の審査＞
その後、7名のファイナリストによる自己PRと質疑応答が行われました。
自己PRでは、英語だけでなく日本語にて自己PRを行う方や、日本語の歌を歌われた方、そしてインドの伝統的な踊りを披露された方もいらっしゃり、ファイナリスト7名のこの大会へ込めた熱い思いを感じました。
その中でも、大変印象的だったのが皆様がこぞって「日本酒はただの飲み物でなく日本の文化である」と自己PRの中でおっしゃっていたことです。日本酒の美味しさだけでなく、長い神事などで使われてきた歴史や日本酒を中心とした器やお食事など様々な日本の文化のアンバサダーであるMiss SAKEとして、ファイナリストの方々のこのようなお言葉は一緒に日本酒と日本文化を発信していくMiss SAKEの仲間として大変心強く感じました。
質疑応答では、「日本酒に合わせるとしたらどんなインドのお食事をあわせますか？」や「日本人に紹介したいインドの文化は何ですか？」など高度な質問が繰り返される中、ファイナリストの皆さんは自信に満ち溢れた様子で自身の考えを述べていらっしゃいました。
＜2024 Miss SAKE India Kajal Chauhanさん＞
そして厳選なる審査の結果、Kajal Chauhanさんが2024 Miss SAKE Indiaに選出されました。
主催の本多様によるグランプリ発表後、私もKajalさんにティアラを贈呈する役目を果たさせて頂きました。喜びで目に涙を浮かべるKajalさんを拝見し、私も大変嬉しい思いが致しました。
グランプリに輝いたKajalさんは、自己PRでは自分が元気がない時に元気づけてくれた曲として「世界に一つだけの花」を日本語で披露くださいました。また、その後質疑応答でも古事記に記録がある日本酒とインドの歴史を日本語で説明くださり、Kajalさんの真面目で勉強熱心で日本が大好きな気持ちが審査員一同に伝わりました。
また、準グランプリには、Sosowon Khamrangさん、Menakaa Raiさんが選出されました。
この度受賞された３名とファイナリストの方々は、表彰式が終了すると、いらしていた蔵元の元へ向かい日本酒について様々な質問をされており、彼女達の日本のために貢献したいという高い意欲に大変感動いたしました。
改めて、受賞されたみなさんおめでとうございます。そして、この度2024 Miss SAKE Indiaに挑戦してくださったファイナリストの皆さん、勇気を出して応募をしてくださってありがとうございます。
この度2024 Miss SAKE India大会に出席させていただき、日本の文化がいかに世界で愛されているかを実感いたしました。リハーサル時からファイナリストの7名の方と今回挑戦をした経緯や思いを聞かせていただいたのですが、インドにてこのように日本の文化への理解を深めたいと思っている方がいることに大変胸が熱くなりました。
また、中にはこの大会を「人前に出ることが苦手な自分を変えるきっかけとしたい」とおっしゃっているファイナリストもおり、Miss SAKEが日本酒と文化の普及だけでなく、世界での女性の活躍や成長に貢献しておりますこと大変光栄に思いました。
2023 Miss SAKE Japanとして、そして日本人として大変嬉しい1日となりました。

この度は2024 Miss SAKE India誕生の瞬間に立ち会い、インドの方々の日本への関心の高さを実際に伺うことができまして大変光栄に思っております。
主催者の本多様、インドまでお越しくださいました酒蔵の皆さま、ファイナリストの皆様、ご来場下さいました皆様、関係者の皆様に心より御礼申し上げます。

Kajal Chauhan was crowned as the 2024 Miss SAKE India
Hello everyone, I am Kotoko Yamada, the 2023 Miss SAKE Japan.
On February 9th, the “2024 Miss SAKE India Contest” was held in Mumbai, India. I attended as the 2023 Miss SAKE Japan representing the members in Japan and also had the honor of serving as a judge.
Following the inaugural Miss SAKE India held in 2020, this was the second edition of the event, and I am delighted that it took place again.
<2024 Miss SAKE India Contest>
The 2024 Miss SAKE India Contest was organized by Mr. Kojiro Honda, representing the food and hospitality industry through “Kuuraku” under Hirohama India.
Over 30 individuals applied for the contest, and among the finalists were participants who traveled by plane from different regions of India, demonstrating their strong passion for Japan. The event garnered significant attention from various media outlets, F&B professionals in India, influencers, and even Mr. Kobbi Shoshani, the Consul General of Israel in India.

The contest involved a comprehensive evaluation based on online interviews, social media engagement, and judges’ scores on the day of the event. The judging panel consisted of Mr. Hiroaki Uto from the Embassy of Japan in India, Mr. Tatsumi Kondo, the Chairman of the Mumbai Japanese Association, Ms. Raizy Bedi, Director of Magicka promoting women’s empowerment in India, Ms. Mika Eoka, who is involved in sake export business in India, and myself.
The event commenced with an excellent introduction by Ms. Nupur Tewari, the emcee from “Connect India Japan,” a platform connecting India and Japan through various media channels. Following Ms. Tewari’s introduction, Mr. Honda, the organizer of this event, shared his thoughts on the event and the judging criteria. Following that, I provided an overview of Miss SAKE’s activities, explained the roles of the 2024 Miss SAKE India participants, and conducted a brief sake lecture.
Subsequently, representatives from sake breweries present at the venue shared insights about their breweries and sake. Representatives from Miyazaki Sake Brewery (Chiba Prefecture), Usui Shoten (Nagano Prefecture), Chigonoiwa Sake Brewery (Gifu Prefecture), and Nozomi Japan were present, providing explanations about their sake, terroir related to Japanese rice and water, offering an excellent opportunity for the Indian attendees to deepen their knowledge of Japanese sake.

As the final round of judging, the 7 finalists delivered their self-introductions and engaged in a question-and-answer session. The self-introductions were noteworthy, as some contestants delivered their speeches in both English and Japanese, sang Japanese songs, and performed traditional Indian dances, showcasing their passion for this contest.
What struck me was their unanimous declaration during their self-introductions that “Japanese sake is not just a beverage but a part of Japanese culture.” As Miss SAKE promoting Japanese sake and culture, I found their words very encouraging.
During the Q&A session, amid advanced questions such as “What Indian dish would you pair with Japanese sake?” and “What aspect of Indian culture would you like to introduce to the Japanese?” the finalists confidently expressed their views.
<Winner of the 2024 Miss SAKE India, Kajal Chauhan>
After careful consideration, Kajal Chauhan was crowned as the winner of the 2024 Miss SAKE India. Following Mr. Honda’s announcement, I had the honor of presenting the tiara to Kajal. Witnessing Kajal’s tears of joy, I too felt immensely delighted.
Kajal impressed the judges by performing “Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana” in Japanese as part of her self-introduction, and later explained the history of sake in Japan and India recorded in the Kojiki, demonstrating her earnestness and love for Japan.
Additionally, Sosowon Khamrang and Menakaa Rai were selected as runners-up.
These 3 awardees and all the finalists, after the awards ceremony, showed great enthusiasm in interacting with the brewery representatives, asking various questions about Japanese sake, demonstrating their strong desire to contribute to Japan.
Congratulations once again to all the winners, and a heartfelt thank you to all the finalists who participated in the 2024 Miss SAKE India contest with courage.
Attending the 2024 Miss SAKE India contest made me realize how much Japanese culture is loved around the world. From the rehearsal stage, I heard the stories and motivations behind the challenges of the seven finalists, and I was deeply moved to see individuals in India who want to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture. Some finalists even expressed their desire to use this contest as an opportunity to overcome their fear of public speaking.
As the 2023 Miss SAKE Japan, and as a Japanese person, it was truly a fulfilling day.

I am truly honored to have been present at the moment of the birth of 2024 Miss SAKE India and to witness the high level of interest in Japan among the people of India. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Honda, the organizer, all the finalists, everyone who attended the event, and all the staff involved.
