Miss SAKE attended the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Philippines-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, held in Manila [English Below]

2023 Miss SAKE Japan 山田琴子です。

夏の暑さが過ぎ去り、秋の涼しさを感じる季節となりました。

10月9日、フィリピン マニラのマカティ市のThe Peninsula Manila Rigodon Ballroomにて開催されました、『フィリピン日本商工会議所の設立50周年記念式』に2023 Miss SAKE 山田琴子と、準グランプリの齋藤ひかりさんと参加してまいりました。

フィリピン日本商工会議所 (JCCIPI)とは

フィリピン日本商工会議所は、1973年11月に設立された非営利の団体です。

会員数は、現在686社（2023年9月現在）を超え、フィリピンに進出している会員企業相互の交流を図るとともに、企業の円滑な活動のため、各種情報提供活動を行い、また、経営上の課題となっている事柄に対して、関係機関とも連携し、その解決に当たられていらっしゃいます。

丸紅フィリピン会社の下田茂社長が会頭を、小関友寛様が事務局長を務められていらっしゃいます。

 

フィリピン日本商工会議所の設立50周年記念式

フィリピン日本商工会議所の設立50周年記念式の会場では、Canon様によるフォトブースや、様々な方からのお祝いのお花も並び、フィリピン日本商工会議所の重要性と、この記念すべき節目の年へのお祝いの気持ちを感じました。

式は、フィリピン育ちの日本人の横川愛作様、日本とフィリピンのハーフで日本育ちで2020年のミスユニーバスジャパンで3位を獲得されたヤナ・フエンテス様により進行が行われました。

まず初めに、会頭の下田茂さまより、ご来賓の皆さまに開会のご挨拶をいただきました。下田さまは、フィリピン日本商工会議所の歴史を振り返り、50年前の1973年の時からの商工会議所の成長と現在では「フィリピンに30万人以上の雇用を生み出している」という成果をご報告なさいました。

 

その後、フィリピン政府よりハイメ・バウティスタ運輸大臣がお祝いの言葉を述べられました。日本とフィリピンが協力をしたことでできた様々なフィリピンの運輸インフラ事業について触れられておりました。

バウティスタ運輸大臣に加え、フィリピン政府よりアルフレド・パスクアル貿易産業大臣、ミレーン・ガルシア＝アルバノ駐日フィリピン共和国特命全権大使をはじめとした様々な方よりお祝いのメッセージが贈られました。

日本からは、駐フィリピン特命全権大使の越川和彦様、そして日本商工会議所会頭 小林 健様の代読で日本商工会議所 理事・事務局長 荒井恒一様よりお祝いのお言葉がございました。

最後に、私共Miss SAKEからMiss SAKEの活動のご紹介と、日本の伝統的なお祝いの場で行う『鏡開き』のご説明、日本酒ブースの日本酒のご紹介を英語にていたしました。

その後、ご来賓の皆様とご一緒に『よいしょよいしょよいしょ』の掛け声と共に、鏡開きを致しました。フィリピンの地で、日本の伝統的なお祝いの文化である鏡開きを日本酒の樽を使い行ったことは日本文化のアンバサダーとして大変誇らしく、国境を超えた温かい日本とフィリピンの友情を感じた瞬間となりました。

開会の宣言ののち、私どもは日本酒ブースにていらっしゃった方々に日本酒のご紹介とおもてなしをさせていただきました。会場のグラスがなくなってしまうほどの、多くの方が日本酒を是非飲みたいといらしてくださり、Miss SAKEとして一生懸命ご紹介をさせていただきました。

中には、フィリピンに駐在なさっている日本人の方が、「久しぶりの日本酒に故郷の味を感じた」と笑顔でお伝えくださり、日本酒を世界へ広めることは、世界で活躍されている日本人を応援することにも繋がるのだということを実感いたしました。

フィリピンマニラを見学

マニラでの滞在の間、50周年記念式の始まるまでの間、下田様にマニラで有名な『Manila Golf & Country Club』へご招待いただき見学をしてまいりました。

フィリピンに数あるゴルフ場の中でも名門中の名門である Manila Golf & Country Clubは、1949年に現在のマカティ市にできたそうです。都心部の中心に位置するこのゴルフコースでは、コース脇に高層ビルが 立ち並び都会の中のオアシスを感じさせる美しい空間でした。

マニラゴルフ内のレストランで、有名なコンビーフライスと、ココナッツジュースをいただきました。塩味のきいたコンビーフととろりとした卵を温かいご飯と頂くのは、大変絶品で忘れられないフィリピンでの思い出となりました。

 

その後、フィリピンの乗合タクシーとして有名な『ジプニー（jeepney）』に日本商工会議所 理事・事務局長 荒井　恒一様と乗車させていただき、マカティ市の街を見学いたしました。

第二次世界大戦後にフィリピン駐留アメリカ軍が残したジープを改造し、製作されたのが始まりで、 Jeep と北米で乗合タクシーを意味する アメリカ英語: jitney との合成語として jeepney と呼ばれるようになったそうです。

後部座席がバスのように横向きになっているジプニーには、乗合バスらしく天井に手すりなどもついており、現地の方の日々の生活の一部を体験させていただきました。道中、窓より道沿いの方々に手を振ると、皆さま笑顔で手を振替してくださり、フィリピンの方々の優しさにも触れた瞬間となりました。

３日間のフィリピン マニラでの滞在でしたが、大変多くのフィリピンの方に日本酒をご紹介する機会をいただきましたこと誠に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

また、ご紹介だけでなく、フィリピンの現地の方々の日本酒の理解度を肌で感じる機会ともなりました。まだまだ、日本酒の魅力を知らない方々が多くいらっしゃるフィリピンで、これからの日本酒の普及に向け、より精力的にMiss SAKEとしてもできることを精一杯頑張っていきたいと決意を新たにいたしました。

 

下田様、小関様、この大変貴重な学びと日本酒の『酒縁』を繋ぐ機会をいただき誠にありがとうございます。

I am 2023 Miss SAKE Japan Kotoko Yamada.

The scorching summer has passed, and now we are entering the season of cool autumn.

On October 9th, at The Peninsula Manila Rigodon Ballroom in Makati City, Manila, Philippines, I had the honor of attending the “50th Anniversary Celebration of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines” alongside 2023 Miss SAKE Runner-up Hikari Saito.

 

About the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines (JCCIPI):

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines (JCCIPI) is a nonprofit organization established in November 1973. It boasts a membership of over 686 companies (as of September 2023) and aims to facilitate interactions among member companies operating in the Philippines. Furthermore, it engages in activities such as providing various forms of information and collaborating with relevant authorities to address issues related to smooth business operations.

Mr. Shigeru Shimoda, President of Marubeni Philippines Corporation, serves as the President, and Mr. Tomohiro Koseki acts as the Secretary General.

 

50th Anniversary Celebration of JCCIPI:

The venue for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the JCCIPI was adorned with a Canon photo booth and numerous flower arrangements from various individuals. These gifts showcased the significance of JCCIPI and conveyed a sense of celebration for this momentous occasion.

The event was hosted by Mr. Aisaku Yokokawa, a Japanese raised in the Philippines, and Ms. Yana Fuentes, a half-Japanese who grew up in Japan and secured the 3rd position in the 2020 Miss Universe Japan competition. 

To commence, Mr. Shigeru Shimoda, the President, delivered the opening remarks, taking a look back at the history of JCCIPI and highlighting its growth since its establishment in 1973. He reported the significant achievement that JCCIPI has generated “over 300,000 jobs in the Philippines.”

Subsequently, his excellency Jaime Bautista, Secretary of Transportation of the Philippine government, shared his congratulatory message. He discussed various transportation infrastructure projects in the Philippines, resulting from the collaboration between Japan and the Philippines.

In addition to H.E. Bautista, several other individuals, including H.E. Alfredo E. Pascual Secretary of Trade and Industry of Philippines, and H.E. Ms. Mylene J. Garcia Albano, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines, presented congratulatory messages.

From Japan, Mr. Kazuhiko Koshikawa, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Philippines, and Mr. Arai Koichi read the congratulatory remarks from Mr. Ken Kobayashi Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on behalf of the Japanese government and business sector. 

Finally, I provided an introduction to the Miss SAKE activities, explained the traditional Japanese sake barrel breaking ceremony, and presented Japanese sake at a dedicated booth, all in English.

Following the opening declaration, we, along with the distinguished guests, conducted the sake barrel breaking ceremony with the spirited call of “yoisho, yoisho, yoisho.” Performing this traditional Japanese celebration ritual, using a sake barrel, in the heart of the Philippines was a moment of immense pride as ambassadors of Japanese culture and an affirmation of the warm friendship between Japan and the Philippines transcending borders.

After the ceremony, we had the opportunity to introduce and serve Japanese sake to the attendees at the Japanese sake booth. Many people were eager to experience Japanese sake to the extent that we ran out of glasses. As Miss SAKE, we did our best to provide enthusiastic explanations and introductions.

Exploring Manila, Philippines:

During our stay in Manila, we were kindly invited by Mr. Shimoda to visit the renowned “Manila Golf & Country Club” in the time leading up to the 50th Anniversary Celebration. The Manila Golf & Country Club, situated in the heart of Makati City, among the towering buildings, is one of the most prestigious golf courses in the Philippines. It was a beautiful oasis within the city, with an elegant atmosphere.

In the Manila Golf Club restaurant, we had the opportunity to savor the famous “corned beef rice” (corned beef with eggs) and coconut juice. Combining the salty corned beef with the creamy eggs, served over warm rice, created an exquisite and unforgettable culinary experience. It became a cherished memory of our time in the Philippines.

 

Afterward, Mr. Koichi Arai, from the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and I had the privilege of experiencing a ride on the “jeepney,” the iconic shared taxi of the Philippines. These iconic vehicles originated from surplus jeeps left by the U.S. military after World War II, and the name “jeepney” evolved as a portmanteau of “jeep” and the American English term for a shared taxi, “jitney.”

The jeepney had rear-facing side benches and resembled a cross between a bus and a taxi, complete with handrails on the ceiling. During the ride, as we waved to people along the roadside from the open windows, they responded with smiles and waves. This moment allowed us to experience the kindness of the Filipino people and their everyday life.

 

Although it was a short three-day stay in Manila, we are truly grateful for the opportunity to introduce Japanese sake to a multitude of people in the Philippines. Beyond the introductions, it was a firsthand experience of the level of awareness of Japanese sake among the local Filipinos. It was evident that there is still much room for spreading the charm of Japanese sake in the Philippines, and this reinforced our determination to work vigorously as Miss SAKE in advancing its recognition in this country.

 

Mr. Shimoda, Mr. Koseki, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to both of you for this invaluable learning experience and the opportunity to connect people through the wonderful world of Japanese sake.
