Courtesy Visit to the Embassy of Japan in Austria and the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna （English version below）

皆様、こんにちは。

2023 Miss SAKE 準グランプリ 齋藤ひかりです。

澄んだ秋空が心地よい季節となった2025年10月上旬、オーストリア・ウィーンで行われた日本酒イベント「Sake Week Vienna 2025 」に参加させていただきました。

昨年に続き参加することができ、再びオーストリアの皆さまと日本酒の魅力を分かち合えたことを嬉しく思います。

ウィーン滞在中、大変光栄なことに在オーストリア日本国大使館と在ウィーン国際機関日本政府代表部に弊社団 代表理事 大西美香と共に表敬訪問に伺う機会を頂きましたので、ご報告いたします。

当日は、ジェトロ・ウィーン事務所の所長である神野達雄様にもご同席いただきました。ご多用のところお時間を賜り、心より感謝申し上げます。

 

在オーストリア日本国大使館

まず初めに、在オーストリア日本国大使館の特命全権大使でいらっしゃる岩間公典大使を表敬訪問させていただきました。日本からご帰国されたばかりのご多忙の中、お時間を頂戴し、心より感謝申し上げます。

表敬訪問では、岩間大使とさまざまなお話をさせていただきました。

まず、オーストリアにおける和食文化の浸透状況についてお伺いしました。
ウィーンをはじめとする各地では、日本食レストランや日本食品を取り扱うスーパーマーケットも見られるようになってきたものの、まだその数は限られているとのこと。現地の方々に日本の食文化がどのように受け入れられているのか、大使のご見識から貴重なお話を伺うことができました。

続いて、私自身がMiss SAKEを志したきっかけについてもお話しさせていただきました。

私がこれまで何かを好きになったとき、そこには必ず「きっかけ」となる出会いや出来事がありました。日本酒を好きになった時も、Miss SAKEの存在を知った時も、まさにそうでした。
だからこそ今度は、誰かが日本酒を好きになる「きっかけ」を届けられる存在になりたいーその思いを胸に活動していることをお伝えしました。

また、Miss SAKEが国内にとどまらず、海外でも日本酒や文化の魅力を伝える活動を積極的に行っていることについてもご紹介いたしました。

その際、岩間大使からは、「同じ“アンバサダー”として、これからも日本の魅力を伝えていってほしい」と温かく励ましていただきました。

国を代表して日々ご活躍される大使のお言葉に、深く感激し、これからの活動への大きな励みとなりました。

この度はお忙しいところお時間を頂きまして、誠にありがとうございました。

在ウィーン国際機関日本政府代表部

続いて、在ウィーン国際機関日本政府常駐代表 特命全権大使でいらっしゃる海部篤様を表敬訪問させていただきました。

政府代表部は、国際機関に対して日本政府を代表する機関で、国際連合、ウィーンにある国際機関、ジュネーブにある国際機関と軍縮会議、OECD（経済協力開発機構）、EU（欧州連合）に対する政府代表部等があります。(外務省ホームページ引用)

海部大使によると、国際機関はまさに「小さな地球」のような場所で、それぞれの国の代表が集まり、政治だけでなく文化的な交流も行われているそうです。そのような場で、日本酒は国と国をつなぐ架け橋としての役割も果たしているとのことでした。

Miss SAKEの活動についてお話しする中で、大使も赴任前研修で受講された日本酒講座の話題になり、その知識が赴任後に非常に役立っていると伺いました。特に、国際会議やレセプションで日本酒を提供する際には、酒蔵や地域の歴史、作り手の思いといった「ストーリー」を伝えることを大切にされているとのことです。

具体例として、ウィーンで開催された国際原子力機関（IAEA）の総会のレセプションでは、福島産の日本酒が提供されました。その際、酒蔵や地域の背景を紹介することで、出席者に福島の新たなイメージを伝えることができたとお話しくださいました。詳細はこちらをご覧ください：国際原子力機関（IAEA）第69回総会

海部大使のお話から、外交の場においても文化やストーリーの力が非常に大きいことを改めて実感しました。

Hello everyone.
This is Hikari Saito, 2023 Miss Sake Runner-up.

In early October 2025, I had the pleasure of participating in the Japanese sake event, Sake Week Vienna 2025, held in Vienna, Austria.

I was honored to participate once again this year and to have the opportunity to share the appeal of Japanese sake in Vienna.

During my stay in Vienna, I had the great honor, together with Mika Onishi, Executive Director of Miss SAKE Association, to pay a courtesy visit to the Embassy of Japan in Austria and the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna. 

We were also joined by Mr. Tatsuo Kamino, Director of JETRO Wien. I sincerely appreciate the time everyone kindly spared us despite their busy schedules.

Embassy of Japan in Austria

First, we had the honor of paying a courtesy visit to His Excellency Ambassador Kiminori Iwama, Ambassador of Japan to Austria. We are sincerely grateful that he kindly spared time for us despite his busy schedule, having just returned from Japan.

Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986, he has held key diplomatic positions, including Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Germany and Consul General in Düsseldorf. In January 2025, he assumed his current post in Austria and also serves as Japan’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE.

During our visit, we discussed several topics, including the spread of Japanese cuisine in Austria. While Japanese restaurants and supermarkets carrying Japanese products are appearing in Vienna and other regions, their number remains limited. Ambassador Iwama shared his valuable insights on how Japanese food culture is received locally.

I also shared that my journey with Japanese sake and Miss SAKE began with experiences that inspired me, and I now hope to be a source of inspiration for others to discover the charm of Japanese sake.

We discussed Miss SAKE’s efforts to promote Japanese sake and culture not only domestically but also internationally. Ambassador Iwama kindly encouraged me, saying, “As a fellow ambassador, please continue to share Japan’s charm as Miss SAKE.” His words were deeply inspiring and will be a great source of motivation for my future activities.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Iwama and everyone involved for taking the time for us.

Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna

Next, we had the honor of paying a courtesy visit to His Excellency Atsushi Kaifu, Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna.

Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988, Ambassador Kaifu has gained extensive experience in diplomacy, including disarmament, cultural exchange, and public diplomacy. From 2024 to 2025, he also served as Chair of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO.

Ambassador Kaifu described international organizations as “a small world,” where representatives engage not only in political discussions but also in cultural exchange. In this context, Japanese sake serves as a bridge connecting countries.

During our conversation about Miss SAKE’s activities, we learned that the Japanese sake course Ambassador Kaifu attended during his pre-assignment training has been very useful in his work. He emphasized the importance of conveying the “story” behind every sakeーits brewery, region, and makersーwhen serving it at international conferences or receptions.

For example, at a reception during the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Fukushima sake was served. By sharing the background of the breweries and the region, attendees gained a new and positive impression of Fukushima.

Ambassador Kaifu’s insights reminded us of the powerful role that culture and storytelling play in diplomacy. 

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Kaifu and everyone involved for taking the time for us.

Moving forward, through our activities, I hope to continue promoting the charm of Japan to the world and to contribute to strengthening ties with the international community.
